06.01.2013 Bulletin

by Marita
(Montevideo Uruguay)

Dear Folks,

The year 2013 started with a bang--or lots of them: Fireworks. Different country, different customs. Around here, calendars were cut up into confetti and thrown out of windows. Followed by people dumping buckets of water on passersby below. (Having been warned, I stayed dry.)

The weather is being good to us, so we sat outside again on Sunday, and discussed many topics. And participants are now helping out with information, such as:

1. The first is a recommendation for a hardware store, San Jose ferreteria. It is on San Jose about two blocks behind the Sheraton Four Points Hotel. Telephone 2901 1153. Both the owner and her daughter, both women, speak English with an American accent but are both Uruguayans. Prices are the same as everywhere in Centro but less than Pocitos. They are both knowledgeable and have an extensive inventory of household and hardware items. If they do not have it, they can get it within about two days if it is at all available. For their inventory, advice and language ability, it is the best I have found.

2. By way of entertainment, consider

THIS IS BRUMOUR TOO!

An entirely new selection of hilarious gags, skits and sketches by Monty Python, The Two Ronnies, Rowan Atkinson, Billy Connolly and many others

No need to define which show, just buy your ticket and see any of the performances!

Real English beer and hamburgers will surely add to the merriment as its an open air event out in the back garden, however an indoor alternative has been arranged in case of bad weather.

3. On the topics of goodies and entertainment, consder

Don't know if you, or others are aware that the Empanada wraps you can buy are same as puff pastry....Nice discovery for me...there are 2 types and come in all sizes and shapes...Tienda has their own brand that comes in large rectangular
size and can be filled and rolled up or use flat...trick is to get the ones that say " Hojaldradas"....really good.

There is supposed to be live music, I think, on 4 different beaches in Montevideo this Friday...Pocitos and Ramirez are listed, BUT I don't know what time and whether worth a mention but it is unusual to hear live music anywhere here...

Also saw a mention of a " Brazilian parade " on Rambla Carrasco on the 19th. again that's all the info I have on that...Not sure where or how to find out more, but you seem to be always able too!

So Carnival starts soon too.

4. And a request for information: Does anyone have any suggestions for preserving milk one buys here? I seem to buy and it goes sour after a couple days? I hate throwing things out...so wasteful but can't seem to keep ...I have tried 2 different brands...and only use for coffee mostly, but it's frustrating....not sure if anyone else has same problem...and or a suggestion ?

5. A number of people are looking for a place to stay--rentals for a couple of months to long term. If you know of anything, please let me know so I can pass it on.

6. In case you missed it: the bus fares have gone up again. The 1 hour ticket is now 20 Pesos (up from 19) and the 2 hour ticket is 30 pesos (up from 27). The Centrico ticket is now 13 pesos (up from 11). If you use the busses a lot, be sure to get the tarjeta that lets you get 1 transfer during 1 hour, and 2 transfers during 2 hours.

7. Zara and Kanan's sale was a success--the place was totally emptied out, and they were satisfied with the results. They have now gone off on a trip to Antarctica, but will be back before they leave for Malaysia.

8. For those of you who haven't been to Torrente, may I suggest you come and try their strawberry juice. They also have a jug of Tutti Frutti on offer, but I think you can't beat strawberry juice.

So come by on Sunday, enjoy the company and the varied menu, and try some strawberry juice.

Cheers, Marita
