30.11.2013 Bulletin

(Montevideo Uruguay)

"Years ago, someone said that, according to the laws of aerodynamics, bumblebees cannot fly. But the bumblebees, not knowing the laws of aerodynamics, go ahead and fly anyway." -- Thomas Sowell.

Dear Folks,

Now that Thanksgiving has come and gone, Christmas is almost upon us--hard to believe. Where has the year gone? Ah, well, the joys of Christmas in 25 to 30 degree temperatures will soon be in full swing. It is to be hoped that you will not be too busy with preparations to come by La Papoñita on Sunday at 14:00 (2 pm) for food and good conversation.

And what's up? Well,

1. Three free concerts: :

will play works of Alfonso X "El Sabio", Johann Sebastian Bach, Fernando Sor and Atahualpa Yupanqui

Juan Manuel Blanes 1116 esq. Durazno
Teléfono: +598 2418 3066
E-Mail: ierpmontevideo@yahoo.com

2. A Heads-Up for those planning travel on GOL--the Brazilian airlines is having a bit of trouble, and its ability to handle the Football World Cup onslaught are in question.

3. For Star-Gazers:

a) Comet ISON may be something worth watching, given the good location of Uruguay for doing so

b) You are not the only Uruguayan peering into the universe: local researchers have just published work on black holes:

4. Addendum to the info on items sent to you from outside Uruguay: There is, of course, an important caveat regarding electronics, as was pointed out by one participant:

People also need to know there is a long list of items that do not fall into the list of items you can import duty free including most electronics. I just bought a phone for less than $200 with free shipping but still had to pay about $120 duty.

Last call for the Residency Consultations from Fischer and Schickendantz:

FREE ONE-ON-ONE RESIDENCY AND CITIZENSHIP CONSULTATIONS are being offered through the Uruguay Phyle on Saturday, 30 November, in Punta Del Este. If you are already working with a service provider on Residency or Citizenship, this free 15-minute consultation is simply an opportunity for you to get a "second opinion" on the steps to take to get your residency or citizenship. For more details or to RSVP for a consultation e-mail: uruguayphyle (at) hotmail.com.

Which concludes the round-up for the week. Come by La Papoñita on Sunday at 14:00 (2 pm) to discuss these and any other topics that interest you.
